Getting Ready for Your First Attorney Consultation

Immigration law is complex and constantly changing. If you are looking for a consultation related to an immigration issue, it is important that the attorney you are seeing is well-informed regarding the various details of your situation. The initial consultation acts as your first introduction to the attorney, providing you an opportunity to receive professional recommendations regarding your immigration options.

Delgado Rompf Bruen is committed to making the most of your initial consultation. Preparation is key in optimizing the consultation and ensuring that the attorney is aware of your case-specific details is the best way to prepare. The following are steps to keep in mind while preparing for and participating in your immigration consultations.

  • Complete the provided intake sheet as best you can and return it before your consultation.

The intake sheet is meant to give the attorney insight into the types of immigration benefits for which you may be eligible. Submitting the intake sheet ahead of time allows the attorney to take time before your consultation to familiarize themselves with your history and better tailor their questions to your specific case.

  • Submit or bring any specifically requested or otherwise relevant documentation.

In addition to the intake sheet, it is helpful to submit any documents you may have about your criminal and immigration history. If you have previously applied for an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa or have been the beneficiary of any immigration benefit applied for by someone else, documents pertaining to the case are helpful to inform the attorney of your eligibility for future benefits. Additionally, any criminal history may affect your eligibility or require a waiver, depending on the charge and outcome of the case, and would be helpful to have ahead of time.

  • Prepare your questions for the attorney ahead of time.

Before the consultation, create a list of questions to ask the attorney. The consultation is a great time to ask the attorney any questions you have regarding the options available to you, as well as to address any concerns you may have moving forward with the process. Take the time to prepare this list ahead of time to ensure that you make the most of the consultation and feel comfortable with taking the next steps knowing you are well-informed.

  • Approach the consultation with honesty.

In a consultation, there is no judgment. The questions asked, either on the intake sheet or in the consultation, are meant to give the attorney a complete picture of your history, which they will use to make informed steps on how to move forward with your case. The best practice is to be honest with the attorney, so that they can properly inform you of your immigration options and all the steps involved in obtaining an immigration benefit.

An immigration consultation is just the first step in your immigration journey. Each consultation is tailored to the needs of the prospective client. Generally, your consultation will wrap up with information from the attorney regarding your options. The attorney will lay out the steps for moving forward, if you choose to do so, including signing a representation agreement to officially begin your case.

If you are interested in learning more about the immigration benefits for which you qualify, you can contact us at Delgado Rompf Bruen to schedule your consultation. We look forward to meeting you.
