When Do I Need a REAL ID?

The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 and changed the security protocol for obtaining a government-issued identity document. As of May 7, 2025, the REAL ID requirements are now applicable. This means that REAL ID-compliant identification documents will be required in certain circumstances. Identification documents that are considered REAL ID-compliant include:

  • REAL IDs issued by the state
  • Employment Authorization Documents (EADs)
  • Foreign or United States passports
  • Border Crossing Cards
  • Legal Permanent Resident Cards

So, when do you need a REAL ID?

You NEED a REAL ID-compliant document to:

  • Enter most federal facilities
  • Board a flight in the U.S.
  • Visit military bases

You do NOT NEED a REAL ID-compliant document to:

  • Enter federal facilities that do not require ID for general access
  • Access health- or life-preserving services
  • Apply for or receive federal benefits
  • Drive
  • Enter a police station or request law enforcement assistance

In certain scenarios, accessing federal buildings for immigration purposes, such as attending oath ceremonies in federally secure buildings, will require a REAL ID-compliant identification document for entry.

To obtain a REAL ID, visit Illinois’ driver’s licensing agency website to find the specific requirements or use this link to verify which documents you need, https://realid.ilsos.gov/checklist.html. If you live outside of Illinois, you can use the usa.gov vehicle services website to determine your state-specific requirements.
