Naturalization is the process of becoming a United States citizen. For many, naturalization is the end of a long road, typically beginning with nonimmigrant status, or no status, and then obtaining permanent residency, before ultimately naturalizing as a U.S. citizen. Becoming a U.S. citizen has many benefits, such as voting rights, traveling with a U.S. passport, and protection from deportation.
Most individuals who choose to naturalize will do so either by proving that they have been lawful permanent residents for the last five years, or that they have been lawful permanent residents for the last three years, have lived with their U.S. citizen spouse for at least three years. Applicants for naturalization must show they meet the continuous residence and physical presence requirements, and that they have demonstrated good moral character in the years preceding their application.
Certain individuals may acquire or derive citizenship by operation of law. This is common in situations where children are born to U.S. citizens outside the United States or when foreign nationals naturalize and have minor children that are U.S. permanent residents. Individuals who have derived or acquired citizenship may be eligible to file for a Certificate of Citizenship and/or a U.S. passport.
